“미국의 NP(전담 간호사·nurse practitioner) 같은 역할을 했습니다.

Following yesterday, we are sending the second episode of “The Korean Angel's Flower Nightingale.”

-Did you dream of being a nurse since childhood?

“I entered nursing college at the recommendation of my elder sister, but I wandered a lot. Questions such as ‘why am I living?’ and ‘why am I studying nursing’ continued. Then, during my first year's summer vacation, I visited the first hospital for leprosy in Yeosu, “Aeyangwon,” and there I learned a lot.”

-What do you mean, you woke up.

“People who live there are grateful, happy, and at ease even though their hands and feet are rubbed and their faces are distorted. Like people living in heaven. Looking at them, I learned that the reason I live is love, and nursing is the tool to practice that love. I have to study nursing and live a life of practicing love, so I decided that I wish I could be used in the most difficult and difficult places.”

-So you went to Africa?

“After graduating, I worked at a university hospital for 6 years, and it was time to grow up on my own, but on the other hand, I was scared. I think I'll be settled in terms of salary and life stability. At that time, through a church in Seoul, when I heard that Kenya, Africa, needed a nurse, I raised my hand to go.”

-Were there any opposition from the family or any worries about the future?

“The family didn't want to go. At that time, a lot of lines came in (laughs). If I married and live with a normal baby, I didn't think I would be able to do what I wanted to do. I thought I had to choose between them. Since my parents also knew that I was living with clear goals from college, they supported me in the end.”

-Can't you practice love while having a child and living a normal life in Korea?

“You don't have to go to Africa to live a life of service. However, I wanted it to be helpful in places that demanded me more, in places that are worse and harder. That was Africa. Korean university hospitals have a lot of people to work without me.”

◇ Malawi Nightingale

-What did you do in Africa?

“I acted like an American NP (nurse practitioner). In the United States, NP can make a diagnosis and write a prescription before seeing a specialist. She enrolled in the Kenya Nursing Association, took an orientation, and obtained a local nursing license. In a mobile medical treatment vehicle, I went around each village with a visiting bag. We have taken care of a wide range of patients, from patients with skin problems to patients with malaria.”

-After working in Kenya for 4 years, I went to Malawi.

“Kenya alone is the center of East Africa. Many international conferences are held in Nairobi, the capital city, and there are also large hospitals. At the time, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), Malawi was the country with the shortest medical staff per the population.”

-Language and food are different, wasn't it difficult?

“I am confident in patience and enduring. I can sleep on the dirt floor, and I can sleep in the hotel.” “When I went to Malawi, there were many cases where it became dangerous because I left a bottle that could be easily cured for a long time. I thought I needed a clinic that could provide early treatment and even follow-up care. My acquaintances helped, but I also had to reduce my living expenses. There were many days to hold on with a banana and a cup of coffee.

-Next to the clinic was the construction of a hospital.

“Once at dawn, the mother of her child came to the clinic with a child of cerebral malaria, and she was already in a coma. Her child couldn't even use her hand and she died in my arms. She buried the child in the ground and returned, and she said,'Wouldn't she be able to save the children if it was supported by medical facilities? I have to build a hospital.' She has an eagerness to do.”

-Unlike a clinic, building a hospital would cost a lot more money.

“I wanted to keep it as a dream, but one day, on my way to mobile medical treatment, a phone call came from Korea. He doesn't know his name or face, but he asked,'What do you need?' I am a living person with 1,000 dollars, but this person has a different scale to help (laughs). I kept telling me what I needed, so I said I needed a hospital.”

At that time, the person who called Nurse Paik was Yu-geun Jung (75), chairman of Daeyang Commercial Ship, a shipping company. Chairman Chung worked with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to deliver aid food for famine states. Chairman Chung, who was looking for a way to directly help a country suffering from poverty and famine, was introduced to Nurse Paik through the WFP, and in October of that year, he founded the “Miracle for Africa” Foundation in Africa to start building a hospital.

And in two years and five months, the “Ocean Nougat Hospital” equipped with state-of-the-art equipment of 200 beds was built in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. In addition, “Miracle for Africa” established Daeyang Nursing College in 2010 and Information Communication Technology College in 2012. <Reporter Nam Jung-mi>-hereinafter omitted-】

How is it? The way of the saint? There is a path of science and a path of morality in the world. <Since the material is broken, the mind must also be broken.> This life is already too late, but in the next life, I feel like a chimney to walk on the path of a saint to revive morality since I am young too!
