우려! 병원내 사람들만 검사, 사망자 훨씬 많아질듯
유증상자 7일간 자가 격리, 이어 14일간 집안 격리
정부는 고용인의 월급 80% 제공, 비저축자는 곤경
위기상황 종료되면 전과는 ‘다른 사회가 펼쳐질 것’

We simply want to know how you all are. We have heard about the virus in Korea and, while much of it seems to have been in the south of the country, we know that Seoul has not escaped. So how are you and Samuel and Onyoo and her family?
영국 북아일랜드 라언에서 친구들이 인사 전합니다. 우리는 여러분이 어떻게 지내는지 궁금합니다. 코로나 폐렴 바이러스에 대한 한국의 소식을 듣고 있었고 남쪽, 대구 쪽에 타격이 컸으며 서울도 피하지 못한 것으로 알고 있어요. 그래서 사무엘과 온유와 가족 모두 안전한지 궁금합니다.
We are fine. The infection is really just taking off here now-we have had 10 deaths so far in N Ireland but many more are expected. Our hospitals are preparing for many seriously ill patients but so far only people in hospital are being tested. So we don’t really know how many are infected out in the community.
우리는 잘 있습니다. 사실상 이제 이곳에서도 이 전염병이 급격하게 이륙하였습니다. 지금까지 북아일랜드의 사망자는 10명지만 훨씬 많아질 것으로 예상됩니다. 병원에서는 증상이 심각한 환자들을 위한 많은 준비를 하고 있으면서, 지금으로서는 병원 내에 있는 사람들만을 검사하고 있습니다. 그러니 실제로 지역사회 주민의 감염은 얼마가 되는지 정확하게 알지 못합니다.
Only essential work is continuing. Everyone else is supposed to stay indoors except for one walk/run/cycle per day and trips for food and medication. Anyone with symptoms is to self-isolate for 7 days and the household for 14 days. People with underlying health conditions and those over 70(that’s us!) are to stay at home except in exceptional circumstances.
지금은 생존에 필수적인 일만 계속됩니다. 식료품과 의약품 조달을 위해 가족 중 한 사람이 하루 한 번 걷거나, 뛰거나, 자전거를 이용하게 되어 있고 그 이외는 모두 집안에 머물러야 합니다. 유증상자는 7일 동안 자가 격리하고 14일간 집안 내에서 격리해야 합니다. 평소 기저 질환이 있거나 우리 같이 70대인 사람들은 특별한 경우가 아닌 이상 집안에 머물러 있어야 합니다.
As I say, we are both fine and have to satisfy ourselves with video call contact with Mark and Ruth and her family. We really miss her little boy, Adam, because he stayed with us from Sunday until Tuesday each week but that doesn’t happen any longer. This so-called lockdown could continue until the summer. But we are well and have plenty of fresh air where we live and the sea is wonderful to watch.
말했듯이 우리는 건강하고 잘 있지만 아들 마크와 딸 루스의 가족마저 만나지 못하게 하니, 영상 통화로만 만족해야 합니다. 작은 손자 아담이 그립고 너무 보고 싶군요. 매주 일요일에서 화요일까지 3일 동안 우리가 돌봐 왔는데 그럴 수가 없게 되었으니 말이에요. 이른바 이 ‘행동반경에 대한 제재’가 여름까지 지속될 수 있을 것 같습니다. 그럼에도, 우리는 잘 있으며, 우리가 살고 있는 곳이 바닷가여서 공기가 신선하고 바다를 지켜보는 일은 언제나 경이롭습니다.
Boredom is a problem for me. I don’t like watching too much TV, but Rosamund quite likes all kinds of films and serials on TV. I have been reading quite a bit and I play the piano for a wee while. The weather should be improving so I will be able to go out and work in the garden.
그래도 무료함이 문제입니다. 아내는 영화와 연속극 등 TV를 좋아하지만 나는 별로 좋아하지 않습니다. 그동안 나는 독서를 많이 했었고, 내가 좋아하고 잘하는 피아노를 한 동안 연주하였습니다. 날씨가 포근해지면 정원에 나가 일할 수도 있을 것 같군요.
Ruth and her husband both work in a large bakery so they are key workers and will continue to work. Mark is an architect and his work is drying up now. However he works Fridays and Saturdays as a gardener and that will probably continue. The government here is paying employees 80% of their salary if their firms will keep them on the books while things are shut down. They will also pay self-employed people like Mark 80% of their average profits over the last three years but it will not start to be paid until June. Many people will be in real hardship if they have little savings.
딸과 사위는 대기업 베이커리의 핵심 멤버라 일을 계속하게 될 것입니다. 아들은 건축가이니 일의 공급이 그나마 더욱 줄어들고 있습니다. 하지만 금, 토요일에 정원사로서의 일은 아마 할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 공장이나 기업, 사업체가 패쇄 되었을 경우, 정부는 고용인의 월급의 80%를 제공할 예정이라고 합니다. 아들과 같은 자영업자들도 일을 못하게 될 경우, 지난 3년 동안의 평균 수익 중의 80%를 지급할 예정이지만 6월 이후가 될 것입니다. 저축해 두지 않은 많은 사람들이 어려움을 겪게 될 것 같습니다.
We can only hope that this crisis will make people think about what the real issues are and discover that the only hope is the hope that God gives through Jesus. Many churches are offering worship online and people who do not usually attend church may well listen and respond to that message. Let’s hope and pray that this will be the case. It certainly looks as if our society will be different when this crisis subsides. Let’s hope it is change for the better.
