우리나라에는 예로부터 성자(聖者)가 마구 쏟아지는 나라인 것 같습니다. 천주교의 이태석 신부에 이어 ‘하늘이 내린 천사 백영심 간호사’는 아무리 보아도 성녀(聖女)인 것 같아 소개합니다. 더군다나 저의 아내 정타원(正陀圓) 한정선과 한 고향, 한 마을 출신이라 더욱 관심이 커 2회에 걸쳐 보냅니다.
【1990년 9월, 김포국제공항 출국장. 당시 28세이던 백영심 간호사가 아프리카 케냐로 의료선교를 떠나던 날이었다. 돌아올 날은 정해지지 않았다. 부모님은 공항 바닥에 두 다리를 쭉 뻗고 주저앉아 엉엉 울었다. 백 간호사는 2남 4녀 중 셋째 딸. 제주 조천읍 함덕에서 태어나 대학까지 제주에서 마쳤다. 자식을 육지로 내놓는 일만 해도 조마조마했는데, 그 귀한 셋째 딸이 결혼도 하지 않은 채 아프리카로 간다니···.
백 간호사를 아프리카로 파송했던 한국 교회조차도 그가 금방 돌아올 줄 알았다. 처음엔 정식 선교사 월급 대신, 교회 청년들이 모아준 300달러 (약 36만원)와 병원 퇴직금을 가지고 떠났다. 하지만 백 간호사는 아프리카에서 30년을 ‘시스터 백’으로 살았다. 시스터 백은 현지 사람들이 그를 부르는 애칭. 그는 케냐에서 4년, 나머지 세월은 아프리카 중에서도 최빈국이라는 말라위에서 보냈다.
자기 월급을 쪼개고 아껴 말라위에 유치원·초등학교·진료소를 지었고, 200병상 규모의 최신식 종합병원인 대양누가병원과 간호대학 설립도 주도했다. 이 공로를 인정받아 백 간호사는 2012년 이태석상, 2013년 나이팅게일 기장, 2015년 호암상, 지난 8월 성천상을 받았다.
국내외에서 굵직한 사회봉사·의료인상을 두루 받았지만, 언론 인터뷰는 손에 꼽을 정도. 지난달 17일, 성천상 수상을 위해 서울에 온 백 간호사를 만났을 때도, 첫 인사는 ‘저는 인터뷰할 만한 사람이 아닌데···’ 였다. 지난달 18일 ‘성천상’을 받은 백영심 간호사가 환하게 웃고 있다.
이날 입은 원피스는 후배가 시상식 날 입으라고 선물해 준 것이다. 하루 전 인터뷰에서 백 간호사는 국제 구호품 시장에서 1달러 주고 샀다는 남방과 면바지를 입고 왔다. 그는 “옷과 가방이 크게 필요 없다”며 “나에게 필요한 건 이미 넘치도록 받고 있다”고 했다. 벽에 걸린 장식용 천은 말라위 특산품으로, 백 간호사가 현지에서 가져온 것이다. -이신영 영상미디어 기자-
◇ ‘사랑 실천’이 삶의 소명
성천상은 JW 중외제약 창업자인 고 성천 이기석 선생의 생명존중 정신을 기려, 음지에서 헌신적인 의료봉사활동을 통해 의료복지 증진에 기여하면서 사회적인 귀감이 되는 참 의료인을 발굴하기 위해 제정된 상이다.
–상을 사양하신 적도 많으시다 고요? 인터뷰 거절당한 기자도 많고요(웃음).
“다른 사람들이 다 각자 주어진 길을 가는 것처럼 저도 제 길을 가는 것뿐이지, 언론에 나올 만한 일이 아니라고 생각했어요. 지금도 어쩌다 보니 제 일이 조금 알려져서 (인터뷰를) 하지만(웃음)···. 오른손이 하는 일을 왼손이 모르게 하라는 말이 있는데, 저는 이 말을 ‘내가 한 일을 잊어버리는 것’이라고 생각하며 살았어요. 선교사로 조용히 숨어서 일하는 사람이 되고 싶어서, 주변에 개인 정보도 잘 드러내지 않았어요.”
2008년 이명박 정부는 도산 안창호 선생의 막내아들인 안필영 등을 포함해 세계 각국에서 한국인의 위상을 드높인 재외 동포 42명을 ‘건국 60주년 재외 동포 명예위원’으로 위촉했다. 백 간호사도 여기 포함되면서 처음 언론에 이름이 알려졌다.
–명예위원은 어떻게 되셨나요.
“당시 짐바브웨·말라위 겸임대사님이 대양누가병원 기공식에 참석하시면서, 제가 일했던 진료소에도 오셨어요. 이후 한국에서 명예위원이 됐다는 연락이 왔어요. ‘저 너무 바빠서 못 갈 것 같습니다’ 했더니, ‘그게 얼마나 치열한 경쟁을 뚫고 된 건데 무슨 말이냐’고 하시더군요. (웃음) 너무 거절하면 교만하다고 할 것 같아, 알겠다고 했어요.”
–그때 비행기 좌석을 비즈니스 석에서 이코노미 석으로 자진해서 바꿨다고요.
“나랏돈이고 나는 몸도 작은데 비즈니스 석을 탈 필요가 없다고 생각해서, 이코노미 석을 타고 왔어요. 차액을 돌려주셔서, 그걸로 현지에 필요한 약품을 샀습니다.”
–이태석상도 1회 때 수상을 권유 받았지만, 사양해서 2회 때 받으셨다고요...?
“2회 때는 저희 간호대학이 막 문을 열었어요. 구급차도 필요하고 간호대학 버스도 필요한데, 가만 보니 상금이랑 필요한 금액이 맞아 떨어져서 받겠다고 했어요(웃음).” 백 간호사는 호암상 상금 3억 원은 현지에 도서관을 짓는 데 썼다. 성천상 상금 1억은 “현지 중·고등학교를 짓는데 쓸 예정” 이라고 했다.】
어떻습니까? 성녀(聖女)가 따로 있나요? 세상을 위해 이 한 몸 던지는 사람이 성인(聖人) 아닌가요? 이제는 세상이 한 일터, 한 일꾼, 한 가족입니다. 아프리카 오지(奧地)에서 성녀의 길을 가시는 백영심 간호사에게 진리의 가호가 있기를 축원하네요!
