Don't give up
‘포기(抛棄)’란 하던 일이나 하려던 일을 도중에 그만두어 버림을 말합니다. 그런데 사람이 서원(誓願)을 세우고 달려가다가 중도에서 포기해 버리면 이 세상에 부처나 성현(聖賢)은 없을 것입니다. 그렇다면 이 세상에 성자들은 어떻게 성자가 되었을까요?
일명 《자타카(Jataka)》라는 《본생경(本生經)》을 보면, 석가모니 부처님도 한 번 세운 서원을 중도에 포기한 바가 없이 고행(苦行)을 하셨기 때문에 드디어 보리수 아래서 대각(大覺)의 함성을 터뜨리고 부처를 이루셨다고 합니다.
《자타카》는 석가모니 부처님의 전생이야기를 모은 책이지요. 현재 남전대장경 속에 547개의 이야기로 수록돼 있습니다. 내용은 부처님이 깨달음을 얻기 전, 과거세의 수행자 시절이었을 때, 어떤 선행과 공덕을 쌓아 부처가 되었는가를 말해주는 인연설화(因緣說話)입니다.
석가모니 부처님은 6년 고행으로 깨달았다 합니다. 하지만 《자타카》에 보면 사실은 500생의 인욕수행(忍辱修行)을 하신 결과로 부처가 되셨다는 얘기가 나옵니다. 사실은 500생의 보현행(普賢行)을 하셨다는 뜻이지요. 이 때문에 하늘이 뛰어난 ‘삼십이상(三十二相)’ ‘팔십종호(八十宗好)’의 거룩한 상(相)이 되신 것이라 합니다.
‘삼십이상 팔십종호’는 부처님이 지니는 보통 인간과 다른 32가지의 모습과 80가지의 특징을 말합니다. 이렇게 닦아 얻은 몸이 바로 부처인 것입니다. 그런데 하물며 저 같은 중생(衆生)이 겨우 한생 닦았다고 부처가 된다면 말이 되겠습니까? 그렇게 생각하면 당장이라도 때려 치고 싶은 생각이 굴뚝입니다.
다이아몬드 채집 꾼 ‘라파엘 솔라노’는 육체적으로 녹초가 되어 실의에 빠져 있었습니다. 그는 마른 강바닥 위에 있는 둥근 돌에 걸터앉아 동료 두 명에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 할 만큼 했어. 더 이상 계속해도 소용이 없어. 이 조약돌을 봐! 내가 집은 999,999개째야. 그런데도 지금까지 다이아몬드는 하나도 없었어. 만약 내가 다시 하나를 집으면 100만 개가 될 거야. 그러나 그게 무슨 소용이겠어? 그만 단념하겠어.”
세 사람은 베네수엘라의 강줄기에서 다이아몬드를 찾는 데 여러 달을 보냈습니다. 그들은 하루도 쉬지 않고 열심히 일했습니다. 그리고 조약돌을 하나하나 집어보면서 다이아몬드를 찾고자 노력했습니다. 그들의 옷은 남루했고 모자는 갈기갈기 찢어졌으며 몰골은 말이 아니었습니다.
그때 솔라노가 외쳤습니다. “나는 이제 그만 포기하겠어!” 이때 그들 중 한 친구가 무뚝뚝하게 말했습니다. “다른 하나를 더 집어. 그러면 100만 개가 되는 거야.” “좋아!” 솔라노는 허리를 굽혀 한 조약돌에 손을 내밀어 집어 들었습니다. 그것은 달걀 크기만 했습니다.
“됐어! 마지막인 거야.” 그런데 그 조약돌이 묵직했습니다. 그는 눈을 크게 뜨고 깜짝 놀라 소리쳤습니다. “야! 다이아몬드다! 다이아몬드야!” 이 얘기는 1942년 남아메리카 북부 베네수엘라에서 있었던 <해방 자>라고 불린 다이아몬드에 관한 실화입니다.
그 다이아몬드는 지금까지 발견된 것 중 가장 크고 순수한 다이아몬드이었으며, 뉴욕의 보석상에게 20억 달러(약 2조4천억 원)에 팔렸다고 합니다. 이렇게 성공과 실패의 차이는 잘못 시작한 데 있지 않습니다. 마지막 하나를 채우지 못하고 포기하는데 있는 것입니다.
장애물이 있는 것은 포기하라고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 뛰어넘으라고 있는 것이지요. 미국의 전설적인 미식축구 감독 ‘빈스 롬바르디(1913~1970)는 이런 말을 했습니다. “승자(勝者)는 절대 포기하지 않으며, 포기하는 사람은 절대 이기지 못한다.”고 말이지요.
한번 뜻을 세웠으면 어떠한 어려움에도 굴하지 말고 끈기 있게 도전해야 합니다. 달콤한 성공이라는 열매는 끈기의 대가(代價)입니다. <포기하지마라>라는 작자 미상의 시가 있습니다. 한번 낭송(朗誦)해 보시지요.
「때로는 잘못 되더라도/ 그대가 터벅대며 걷는 길이 오르막이더라도/ 미소를 짓고 싶어도 한숨만 새어나오더라도/ 근심이 그대를 짓누르더라도/ 그래, 필요하다면 쉬어라,/ 하지만 포기하지는 마라.
우리 모두가 아는 것처럼/ 삶에는 우여곡절이 있는 법,/ 수많은 실패가 성공으로 바뀌지 않던가./ 성공의 기운이 엿보이면, 그 기운을 꼭 잡으라./ 성공이 뒤늦게 찾아온다고 포기하지 마라./ 어느 날 불어온 바람이 그대에게 성공을 안겨줄 테니까.」
어떻습니까? 세계 최대의 다이아몬드를 움켜쥐고 싶지 않으신가요? 그 최대의 다이아몬드가 바로 부처이고 성현입니다. 그 서원을 세우고 달려가는 사람이 마지막 하나를 포기한다면 얼마나 인생이 아까울 까요? 저 같은 중생도 어쩌면 부처가 되려고 499생 동안 몸부림쳐 왔는지도 모릅니다. 설사 500생을 너머 닦았다 하더라도 포기하지 않으면 어느 땐가 깨칠 날이 있지 않겠는지요.
우리 덕화만발 가족 사전에는 포기라는 말이 없습니다. 저마다 자기가 원하는 서원을 세우고 <지성여불(至誠如佛)>의 정신으로 힘차게 달려봄이 어떠하신지요!

However, if a person sets up a scholarship and runs away and gives up in the middle, there will be no Buddha or a holy hyeon in this world. So how did the saints become saints in this world? If you look at 《Bonsaenggyeong》, also known as 《Jataka》, the shout of the large angles under the bodhi tree, because he did not give up on the vow once established by the Buddha. It is said that he made a Buddha by bursting. 《Jataka》 is a collection of the stories of the past life of Buddha in Shakyamuni. Currently, there are 547 stories in the Tripitaka Koreana. The content is a character story that tells about what kind of good deeds and merit were accumulated before the Buddha gained enlightenment, when he was a practitioner in the past. It is said that Sakyamuni Buddha realized it through six years of asceticism. However, in Jataka, it is said that in fact, he became a Buddha as a result of performing 500 lifelong humanitarian rituals (忍辱修行). In fact, it means that he has performed 500 lives. For this reason, it is said that the heavens have become the holy image of the outstanding “three decades (三十二相)” and “eighty jongho (八十宗好)”. 'Thirty or more eighty jongho' refers to the 32 different figures and 80 characteristics of the Buddha, which are different from ordinary humans. The body that has been polished in this way is the Buddha. But how much more, would it make sense if a rebirth like me became a Buddha because he barely polished it? If you think so, the idea that you want to hit it right now is the chimney. “Raphael Solano,” a diamond-gatherer, was physically exhausted and disheartened. He sat on a boulder on a dry river bed and told two of his colleagues: “I did as much as I could. There's no use going on anymore. Look at this pebble! I have the 999,999th house. Even so, so far there have been no diamonds. If I take one again, there will be a million. But what's the use of that? I will stop giving up.” The three spent months finding diamonds in Venezuela's rivers. They worked hard without a day off. And I tried to find the diamonds by picking up the pebbles one by one. Their clothes were rough, their hats torn to pieces, and they weren't talking. Then Solano cried out. “I'm giving up now!” At this time, one of them said bluntly. “Pick another one. He opened his eyes wide and shouted in amazement. "Hey! It's a diamond! It's a diamond!” This is a true story about a diamond called The Liberator in Venezuela in northern South America in 1942. It was the largest and purest diamond ever found, and it is said to have been sold to a New York jeweler for $2 billion. So the difference between success and failure is not in getting started wrong. It is in giving up without being able to fill the last one. What has obstacles does not mean giving up. It is to jump over. “Vince Lombardi (1913-1970), the legendary American football coach, said this. “The winner never gives up, and the one who gives up never wins,” he said. Once you have made up your mind, you must persist in challenging yourself without giving in to any difficulties. The fruit of sweet success is the price of perseverance. There is an unknown poem called <Don't Give Up>. Let’s recite it once. ``Even if it sometimes goes wrong/ Even if the road you tumultuously walks uphill/ Even if you want to smile but only sighs/ Even if your anxiety weighs on you/ Yes, if necessary, take a break,/ But don't give up. As we all know / There are twists and turns in life, / Doesn't a lot of failures turn into success? The whole wind will bring you success.” How is it? Don't you want to grab the world's largest diamond? The largest diamond is the Buddha and Sunghyun. How much would life be if the person who made that vow and ran away gave up the last one? Perhaps a sentient being like me has struggled for 499 lives to become a Buddha. Even if I have polished more than 500 lives, if I don't give up, there won't be a day to realize it. There is no word for giving up in our Deokhwa Full Family Dictionary. How about making a vow that each person wants and running vigorously with the spirit of <Intellectuality>!
